Man’s evolution is in SEVA. Love of God and service of man is the secret of true life. The meaning of true life is service and sacrifice. Life is meant for service, and not for self-seeking Sacrifice! The more the energy you spend in elevating and serving others, the more the divine energy flow to you.”
SEVA means selfless service—it has been the most important aspect of our ancient way of life. From time immemorial, saints and sages of the yore have called out to the human society to live a life of SEVA-serving others without any expectation of reward or repayment.
What is the object in Seva or service?
Why should one serve the poor the needy, and the suffering humanity at large?
Why should one serve the society and the country?
By doing service, you purify your heart. Egoism, hatred, jealousy, idea of superiority vanish. Humility, pure love, sympathy, tolerance, and mercy are developed. Sense of separateness is annihilated. Selfishness is eradicated.
You get a broad outlook of life. You begin to feel oneness or unity of life. You develop a broad heart with broad, generous views. Eventually, you get Knowledge of the Self. You realise the ‘One-in-all’ and ‘all-in-One’. You feel unbounded joy.
All through his life, our spiritual master Gurudev Swami Chidanandaji had striven to bring about a silent yet powerful revolution in the thoughts and feelings, in the motives and the aspirations of men and women all over the modern world.
He strove to turn the footsteps of mankind away from falsehood unto truth, away from hatred towards love and compassion, away from arrogance and haughtiness towards humility and simplicity. His was a clarion call to a life of Sadachara (right conduct), of Paropakara (Benevolence) and Lokahita-(welfare of the humanity).
In this century when strife and violence, fear and mistrust loom as dark shadows over the lives of men, when ‘self’ prevails over ‘service’, ‘rights’ over ‘duties’ and man is fast losing the capacity to love without any motive, Gurudev Chidanandaji’s teachings met, mingled and flowed through human society, purifying it with human brotherhood, of joyous self-denial, noble self-sacrifice and Vedantic Oneness..
Again and again he would reiterate His Guru Swami Sivanandaji’s teachings :
Selfless service is the very salt of life. Selfless service is the highest Yoga. Selfless service is worship of God. Earnest Karma Yoga is the surest means to Chittashuddhi. Service purifies you, elevates you to magnificent heights. The Divine Light descends into a pure heart. Through sincere service you can attain to the experience of cosmic unity.
Serve all. Love all. Be kind to all. Embrace all. Speak kindly. Speak with love. Never utter harsh words. Never hurt the feelings of others. Regard others as your own Self. Behold the Lord in all. Serve the Lord in all beings. You will become blessed.
Through selfless service and charity, develop the heart and cleanse the lower mind. Purify your heart by selfless and humble service of the poor and the afflicted, and make it a fit abode for God to dwell.
Selfless service alone can purify your heart and fill it with divine virtues. Only the pure in heart will have the vision of God. Grow in love, purity, and self-sacrifice.
Live for others. You will attain the state of blessedness. The world is yourself. Therefore love all, serve all, be kind to all, embrace all. Behold the Lord in the poor, the down-trodden; the oppressed and lowly ones.
Become a servant of humanity. This is the secret of attaining God-realisation. Seek out the sick and needy and the suffering; cheer up and bring a ray of comfort to them by serving them unstintingly. Console the disconsolate. Comfort the distressed. You will be blessed.
Clothe the naked. Educate the illiterate. Feed the poor. Raise the down-trodden. The world is burning with misery and suffering. Wake up, Friends! Serve! Serve with love. Serve untiringly. You will grow by helping them and attain the peace of the Eternal.
Finally, think for yourself, how best you can utilise your energy, your intellect, your education, your wealth, your strength, or anything you possess, for the betterment of others, and for society in general.
We at Swami Chidananda Sevashram, aspire to respond to the above call in its true sense by carrying out various service projects. We will strive to SERVE fellow humanity in general and seek the maximum opportunities to serve selflessly the needy, the poor and the deserving and empower them to live life with dignity and purpose.
The other major task that we would like to take up is education of the young humanity. Gurudev saw clearly that the seeds of Divine Living had to be sown in the pure hearts of children. Goodness and idealism are to be inculcated at a young age.
Education of young humanity in the right direction is the precondition of human welfare and world-peace. Selfishness, craving and confusion can only be overcome and transmuted in the class-rooms of schools and colleges and not later on in the market place where man has already allowed the animal in him to get the upper hand. Regeneration of the youth was therefore a deep concern in his heart.
Hence, we would strive to continue be inspired by him and emulate him to create such regeneration by reaching out to the children and youth through our various education projects.
